,000 flights in and out of the northeast have been canceled. new york city's airports remain officially open at this hour, but most flight activity has ended for the night. already just a few hours into this storm, more than 10,000 electric customers in the northeast have been left without power. and tonight the national guard reports that more than a thousand national guardsmen have been activated in connecticut, massachusetts, and in new york as this region prepares for the worst. joining us now is nbc news meteorologist bill karins. bill, what is the latest at this hour? >> well, melissa we are watching this storm maturing, if we want to call it that. it is growing into intensity. now it is becoming a full-fledged blizzard. in the last hour, about 50,000 people have lost power. and we're going to continue to add to that number to the hundreds of thousands throughout the overnight. that's the worst part of this. losing power in the middle of a winter storm when you don't know how long it's going to be until the power crews can a, get through two or three feet of snow to turn your power bac

there with the the snow blowers and shovels clearing it for the guests. but a lot of the city sidewalks have not been touched. a couple right here behind me walking in the street. the streets have become the sidewalks. obviously people who have pets have to come outside to let their pets do what they need to do. and the street's the best place to do it. we are starting to see some traffic. and i believe that's interstate 95 over here to my left. i am seeing cars and trucks passing down through the interstate. but keep in mind that it's going to be awhile. i don't know if governor chaffey is going to open the roadways back up today. again the priority is to get the roadways cleared. it's going to be tougher for crews to do that if people decide let's go out and take a look and see how bad things are. they want you to stay home. give them a day. and then maybe tomorrow things are going to be a little bit better. >> stay home. watch it on tv. you can get out perhaps better tomorrow. ron mott thanks for the report. >>> let's go to another area buried under deep snow. that's connecticut. we have nbc's ron

amateur video coming in from that russian city. and that meteor slammed into it. it happened in the city about a thousand miles to the east of moscow, and as you noted it happened just after nine o'clock in the morning local time that's why a lot of people saw it and recorded it. a russian scientists says the meteor was about 20 feet side. about the size of a small bus and hit the atmosphere at hyper sonic speed. now, people saw the streaking meteor across the sky and a bright flash and a blast, and exploding into a fireball and three minutes later they heard an explosion, a sonic boom and that's what did the damage, what broke the windows, caved in roofs and damage to other building, again about a thousand hurt and a hundred hospitalized and some 20,000 rescue workers fanned out to see if anybody else was in trouble. and three impact sites for the immediator, now a meteorite. this is rather and unusual and spectacular and most burn up in the atmosphere when he they come down and some small ones hit the united states in the last few years and every five years you get a big one, rarely ar

incredible stuff. the hardest forecast is the new york city because the temperatures are kind of borderline. it may start as snow, go over to rain, a little sleet and back over to snow late. that's why the snow totals for new york, i have them down to six to ten inches. if it's all snow, it could be as much as 14 inches in new york city. that's the big question mark. hartford's going to get nailed, also all the way to southern portions of new hampshire and portland, maine. i mentioned temperatures. notice it's 38 in philly, 34 in baltimore. that's why southwards i don't think you'll get much out of this at all. that's why d.c.'s not getting snow. look how cold it is in the new england area. this is how it plays out. again, the bottom line, the worst of the storm arrives after noon today. so if you're in northern jersey, new york city area, long island, connecticut, hudson valley all the way through eastern mass and rhode island, do not be on the roads after noon today. that's the most important message everyone needs to know because if you do that and you get stuck on the roads, it's going

and west of the city and new england that's where we are going to get a snow event. what are we talking? two storm system as system to the north and a big system across the gulf they are going to come together and merge and bring us that nor' easter. friday overnight into saturday is where we will see the worst conditions. see the snow line the pink tlooins why we are not really entirely sure of the snow totals in new york. for boston and portland interior sections easily 6 to 12 in some cases 2 feet of snow. it could be a blockbuster. here's the breakdown. mid atlantic rain and wind is deepening coastal low as we head into friday and saturday. blizzard conditions for eastern new england. we have blizzard watches in effect where we could see winds 60 miles an hour. there are your winter watches and storm advisories for much of new york up towards maine. this is a big event. we will bring you the latest. if you are traveling tomorrow you need to pay close attention. a lot of folks could stay home. >> i heard epic and blockbuster. >> epic and blockbuster not afraid to use those terms with

notice new york city and jersey didn't have a lot of snow over the next couple of hours. now it's starting to fill in a little bit. it's a little too late. this storm is moving very quickly. look at it on satellite imagery. you can see it just to the south. it's even past cape cod now. for new york city, you have two to four inches on the ground. you'll get another two to three by the time it's all said and done. new york city it's a tough forecast from the start. if there's one city that would be considered a bust, maybe that would be it. heaviest snow shifts, rhode island, massachusetts, new hampshire, coastal maine. we'll be ending the snow in the overnight hours. adirondacks, catskills, poconos and new jersey. we'll have blowing snow out there. heavy accumulating snows will be ending during the overnight hours. if anything, the storm is moving a little faster than expected. a lot of us will actually wake up with no snow falling from the sky saturday morning. the storm total forecast, new york city at 6 to 10, down to 4 to 8. we have a shot of getting 18 or so around hartford

birthday. that hostage standoff here in midland city is finally over. >> a very special child; he's been through a lot. he's endured a lot. by the grace of god, he's okay. >> the five-year-old victim in this story has been saved by hraurplt. a loud boom was heard freeing him from his captor jimmy lee dykes. authorities say they felt he was in imminent danger yesterday afternoon. communication was clearly deteriorating and dykes was becoming agitated. last night we saw them sweeping the property checking for buried bombs as the investigation continues. this while the little boy was taken to a local hospital. >> he is doing fine. he's laughing, joking, playing, eating; the things that you would expect a normal five- to six-year-old young man to do. he's very brave. he's very lucky. and his success story is that he's out safe and doing great. >> f.b.i. officials on the scene at flowers hospital say he is safe and okay. they didn't release any other details about his condition but they did say he was with his mother. as far as a motive in this, a sherrif did touch on it briefly during a pres

a difficult forecast. if you live up in new england down towards areas around new york city, maybe even new jersey, pennsylvania, pay attention. storm coming your way. possibly the most significant winter storm of the season. right now the storm is just growing. it's in an infancy down in areas of texas providing heavy rain south of san antonio on 35, across 37 and also interstate 10 will be a wet ride between houston and san antonio. all of that rain spreads in the next 48 hours through the southeast including atlanta especially tonight into tomorrow. heavy rain through the carolinas. this is what really catches my attention. this is one of our more reliable extended forecasts. this is where the center of the storm would be on friday. early in the morning. as we go throughout the day, the storm intensifies just off of cape cod. and then at this point, the heavy snow machine would go into work, especially across new england late friday, friday through the overnight into saturday morning. this area of shaded colors here is a foot-plus for almost all of new england. the exceptions being north

it in perspective, we are just getting going here. this storm just starting to wind up. in cities like boston, dealing with a slushy mess and snow right now. maine heavy snow for you. new york, just starting to turn over to snow but by the evening rush around 5:00 p.m. really going to get blasted there in new york city. heavy snow expected tonight. could pick up another eight inches to a foot and the word of caution today is get out early, get off the roads. many governors wanting you to do that very thing. here's a look at tomorrow then. still dealing with blizzard-like conditions in the cities including boston. this is a long duration of that and that's a problem with this system. storm:con for boston is a 10. that's the highest level here at the weather channel. you need caution with this. seeing the blizzard-like conditions, additional 12 to 18 inches tonight. the winds ferocious. also gusting up to 60 miles per hour so we'll see blowing, whiteout conditions in massachusetts tonight in to through tomorrow, as well. where we pick up another five to eight inches so blizzard-like conditions

better the temperature in new york city, 37 degrees and it's actually going to be mild across the northeast all the way down to florida. florida is going to be seeing highs into the 80s across southern parts of the state. 76 in the city of tampa, new york city, 46 degrees for high temperature. take a look at portions of the upper midwest. it will be cold day. minneapolis, high temperature is only going to be 3 degrees. that is warm as it is going to get. you factor in the wind and windchill at the moment north central are frigid. it feels like 35 below zero in fargo. we do have a storm system that is impacting portions of great lakes down to the southeast with areas of heavier rain but overall this system is going to be quick mover. doesn't have a lot of moisture. snowfall amounts in the studio that are going to be relatively lighted where you see the white during the morning hours, otherwise portions of maine could see up to ten inches of snow. that is where we have the winter storm winning. out in west, stormy weather expected. we have a new storm that is going to be impacti
